STARKVILLE, Miss.—John J. Green, director of Mississippi State’s Southern Rural Development Center and professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, is the 2025 Rural Renewal Research Prize winner. Receiving the national honor during the annual Rural Renewal Initiative Symposium last month, the recognition is given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and contributions in research, education and engagement that advance the future vitality of rural communities.
The Rural Renewal Initiative is a program administered by Oklahoma State University to catalyze the renewal of rural communities and places through interdisciplinary research, student mobilization and community engagement.
“I am honored to receive the Rural Renewal Research prize,” Green said. “It recognizes the work I have been fortunate to be involved with through the Southern Rural Development Center in collaboration with our many partners at land-grant universities, community organizations and beyond.”
Green also delivered an invited speech titled “Exploring Pathways for Rural Renewal: Conversations About Development.” He discussed the importance of reflection on collaborative efforts and innovative strategies to strengthen rural economies, support community resilience and enhance the quality of life for rural residents.
Under Green’s leadership, the SRDC works to establish and expand its networks connecting universities with community, state and national organizations to support research-informed solutions to rural challenges.
