Winter Weather Tips and Resources
With the potential for winter weather to impact campus and travel this weekend, we want you to be prepared with ways you can stay safe, warm, and weather-ready.
During Extreme Cold:
- Make sure you can receive university updates and alerts. Follow developments and be prepared to take appropriate action if conditions worsen. To sign up for Maroon Alerts, go to emergency.msstate.edu.
- Stock up on extra food items and water from the Maroon Markets, PODs or local stores. Bully's Pantry is also available to provide students with nonperishable food and a limited supply of winter weather gear: students.msstate.edu/resources/msu-food-security-network. Bully’s Pantry is located at 120 Morgan Ave. and open from 1-4 p.m. this week. Follow on Instagram for update: Instagram.com/msstate_fsn.
- Bring pets and sensitive plants indoors.
- Prepare an emergency kit. A flashlight, first-aid kit, extra clothes, and a power bank are important items to include.
- Charge electronic devices in advance and have multiple ways to receive weather updates.
- If you own or rent a house, wrap/cover exposed pipes to prevent freezing.
- Avoid going out during freezing conditions. There may be slick spots on roadways and sidewalks.
- If you must go outside, limit your time outdoors, wear layers, and stay dry.
- Avoid parking under trees or eaves, as limbs may break and snow/ice can accumulate and then fall.
- Avoid travel if possible. If you must travel, check your vehicle and road conditions. Don't rush.
- NEVER use a generator or an unvented fuel-burning appliance indoors or in any enclosed space.
Campus Dining and Market Access:
- In the event of ice or snow accumulation that prevents safe travel, MSU Dining will consolidate services to one or two locations.
- Maroon Markets at Azalea Hall and Griffis Hall will remain open 24 hours, and other residential PODs will likely operate with limited hours.
- Stay up-to-date on dining hours at msstatedining.campusdish.com and MSU Dining’s Instagram: instagram.com/msstatedining.
Students in On-Campus Housing:
- Residence halls will remain open.
- Store extra food and snacks so you do not have to go out in the cold.
- Speak with housing staff if you have concerns.
- Do not drip water from sink faucets or showers in residence halls, as this is more likely to cause water intrusion than prevent it.
Students in Off-Campus Housing:
- Leave faucets dripping to avoid frozen pipes
- Open the doors of under sink cabinets to let warm air circulate
- Know where your water shutoff valve is, just in case
- Avoid travel if roads are icy.
