STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State junior Apollo Stafford of Saucier is spending the fall semester studying abroad in Singapore as a recipient of the prestigious Freeman-Asia Award.
Stafford, an electrical engineering major in MSU’s Bagley College of Engineering, is attending Nanyang Technological University, where his coursework includes multivariable calculus, semiconductor fundamentals, engineering electromagnetics and Chinese. Stafford applied for the award with the aid of MSU’s Office of Prestigious External Scholarships.
“I wanted to experience a different learning environment and thought this university would provide great education while being in a new country as well,” Stafford said. “I also have been taking free cooking classes offered on campus. It has been enjoyable and I have had to get comfortable with new things.”
The Freeman-ASIA Awards provide financial support for U.S. undergraduates to study abroad in East and Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and residents with firsthand exposure to and understanding of Asia, its people and cultures. Since its inception in 2001, Freeman-ASIA has supported more than 5,000 U.S. undergraduates from more than 600 institutions.
Stafford is active on MSU’s campus, serving as a Student Association senator and Interfraternity Council associate, and as a member of the Shackouls Honors College and MSU Lacrosse Club.
His academic experience includes undergraduate research with MSU’s High Performance Computing Collaboratory, and several honors including Rob and Anita Crisler Legacy, Niles and Mary Lyn Moseley Endowed Promise, Prentice McKibben Loyalty and Colvard Future Leader scholarships.
Mentoring and advising for MSU applicants, nominees and finalists for nationally and internationally competitive scholarships are available from the university’s Office of Prestigious External Scholarships.
