STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State’s Lamar Conerly Lecture Series welcomes University of Chicago’s Robert Pape for a discussion on terrorism, spanning the Middle East to America.

Pape, a political science professor and director of the Chicago Project on Security and Threats, will present the public lecture titled “The Insidious Power of Revenge: From City Bombings to Middle Eastern Terrorism to American Vengeance Today.”

The event will be held Thursday, Nov. 13, 4 p.m., Forum Room C401 in Griffis Hall. Admission is free, and all members of the campus and local community are invited to attend. A world-renowned expert on political violence and terrorism, Pape is widely recognized for his groundbreaking research on the logic of suicide terrorism. His book “Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism” (Random House, 2005) remains one of the most influential works in the field of international security. His other publications include “Cutting the Fuse: The Explosion of Global Suicide Terrorism and How to Stop It” (2010) and “Bombing to Win: Air Power and Coercion in War” (1996).

“Dr. Pape’s work offers critical insights into one of the most pressing issues of our time—the rise of political and ideological violence around the world,” said Brian Shoup, professor and head of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. “This lecture provides a unique opportunity for students, faculty and the community to learn from one of the foremost voices in global security studies.”

Pape’s research and commentary have appeared in Foreign Affairs, The New York Times, The Washington Post, American Political Science Review, International Security and numerous national and international media outlets. His most recent scholarship examines the roots of modern political violence, including domestic movements within the U.S.

The Lamar Conerly Lecture is part of a series made possible by major support from Lamar Conerly, a 1971 MSU accounting/pre-law graduate and longtime partner in the Destin, Florida, law firm of Conerly, Bowman and Dykes LLP. Conerly is a former national MSU Alumni Association president and College of Business Alumni Fellow
