MSU adds Climavision to university energy initiative

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State University is adding weather enterprise partners to the university’s growing energy-related research portfolio through a collaboration with Climavision.
The Louisville, Kentucky-based firm has joined MSU’s newly launched Energy Resilience and Innovation Hub as an inaugural industry partner. The Hub is designed to drive advancement in the energy space by coordinating collaboration between the university and external partners from industry and government.
Climavision brings a range of groundbreaking weather observations to the hub, including 29 weather radars filling gaps in the government’s Next-Generation Radar system. Four of these radars already cover parts of Mississippi, and more are planned throughout the Magnolia State. Climavision also produces a full suite of weather models, with higher resolutions and longer time frames than publicly available products.
“This partnership gives Mississippi State students and faculty direct exposure to next-generation weather technology that can enhance our world-class research and learning opportunities,” said MSU Associate Vice President for Research and Economic Development Narcisa Pricope. “Working with Climavision allows us to connect classroom learning with systems that are being used to improve weather forecasting and emergency preparedness in places like rural Mississippi.”
The alliance between MSU and Climavision, formalized by a recently signed memorandum of understanding, will explore academic and research collaborations across a range of focus areas, including remote sensing and hydrology; severe weather preparedness; disaster resilience; water and energy grid resilience; agriculture; and homeland security.

MSU and Climavision will work together to create opportunities including guest lectures, radar site visits, student independent studies and applied case study analysis. The MOU calls for joint efforts to pursue federal, state and local funding to support research initiatives in shared areas of interest.
