STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State University Instructor II Amy Fountain is being recognized by the Lambda Sigma Honor Society with its Jane Price Harmon Gift of Honor for more than 25 years of service and leadership within the organization.
The prestigious award is presented to individuals whose service has made a lasting impact on the national honor society for second-year college students dedicated to fostering leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service. One of the organization’s highest honors, it has been presented only 18 times in the past 46 years, most recently in 2021. After the award was established in 1980, it was renamed in 2014 to honor longtime National President Jane Price Harmon.
Lambda Sigma, founded in 1922, has approximately 38 chapters across the country. At MSU, membership invitations to the Alpha Iota Chapter are extended annually to 50 freshmen based on scholastic achievement, community service, campus involvement and leadership skills. Members complete service projects throughout their sophomore year in support of the university and their communities.
Fountain, a faculty member in MSU’s Department of Communication, Media and Theatre since 1999, has served the honor society in numerous roles at both the university and national levels, including advising the university’s chapter since 2001 and several on Lambda Sigma’s National Executive Board in several positions for the past 13 years.
“I am honored to receive an award named for the leader who was serving as president of the national organization when I joined the board,” Fountain said. “Her commitment to developing civic-minded young adults has had a lasting impact on my work with Lambda Sigma.
“The opportunity to mentor and support emerging student leaders at Mississippi State as they make a positive impact on our campus and community has been a highlight of my career,” she continued. “I am equally grateful for the friendships and professional connections I have gained through the National Board, where I have worked alongside dedicated colleagues from campuses across the country.”
Under Fountain’s leadership, MSU’s chapter consistently has ranked among the strongest in the national organization. Through her work on the National Executive Board, she also has helped support and strengthen Lambda Sigma chapters across the country.
MSU’s Department of Communication, Media and Theatre is housed in the university’s College of Arts and Sciences.
